Produced at ETC in 1984 by Peter Chamberlain. Interesting anlog/digital hybrid program/system by Dave Jones but can't remember details...worked with it quite awhile before coming up with this (camera capture of one lens case). Sound track made from hanging a window weight from rafter with nylon string, contact mic attached to string, bowed with violin bow and run live through Yamaha analog delay. X-ray hands had to do with nukes and Bedouin tents somehow referenced a turbulent mid-east, but I can't recall a specific conflict there in 84 (though there has always been something going on there)
Took daughter Iris to ETC residency in 1984 (age 1) and found the best way to entertain her was to use her as subject. Of tekkie interest is the use of the "wobulator', a custom-made tool incorporating a B/W tv with added magnetic coils and controllers...a fave at the Center. Video was another of my many jam sessions exploring all the exciting new tools and systems of production there. The sound track was produced independently at a session in a barn at Robert Gelles' (RIP) home in Kerhonkson, NY (Catskills). While Iris sleep in the open trunk of the car we produced 3 or 4 very nice improvs. Gelles on guitar, Susan (Iris' mom) on vocals, and I was exploring one of the first computer-interfaced keyboards (SCSI I think). Drum tracks were composed by rolling a golf ball haphazardly on a $99 Synsonics drum pad toy sent directly to mix where bass was boosted for a richer feel. These were "no discussion jams" and the words just evolved.
The third "music video" recorded in Robert Gelles' barn. ETC video was manipulated live while listening to song. Musicians; Robert Gelles, guitar, Susan Starr, vocals, Peter Chamberlain, Apple II w/keyboard interface. Drums recorded by rolling golf ball on toy Synsonix drum pads, MXR harmonizer on voice.
In the mid 80's the American Film Institute advertised a competitive traveling video exhibition called "The Other New York", and specified only artists from NY State living outside of NY City could participate. Having already developed a history of urban/rural conflicts in artists' identities and contexts I decided to have some fun with the theme. Consequently, I shot footage of various "upstate" locations and activities with the idea of "giving them city-folk what they expected". As "upstaters" were certainly considered to be basically yahoos, I invited my neighbors who were homesteaders (Jean played accordion in high school but not since, and Dennis, a contractor who played nothing was given a 4' piece of 4" sewer pipe to hum into, the end of which was placed inside the acoustic up right piano for resonance and amplification. Another contractor/friend who actually played pretty good harmonica was included and my then wife Susan sang...while I played the piano. We just set up a simple chord sequence, explained the goal of fulfilling fantasies of upstaters, improvised our way through 5 minutes, and pretty much nailed the first take. When I moved it to the already edited video it happened to fit perfectly. In opposition to my predicted outcome of ruffling some elitist feathers, the video got accepted into the traveling exhibition.
Produced at ETC residency in my undies. Again, David Jones had a strange 16 - frame sequencing buffer that was sort of complicated to precisely control. Can't recall where the inspiration or title came from. Music has obviously been chance constructed (from a variety of familiar pieces used elsewhere) as a consequence of the video editing/buffering process. Can't remember details. Strange piece even for me.
Another sample of first hour of exploring the Jone Buffer at ETC. Song from my band SNAKE (1999) thrown on just to have some sound and rhythm accompaniment.
more exploring the Jones Buffer at ETC. Background song by SNAKE, recorded at ZBS studios 1970. No relationship to video.
more first time on the Jones Buffer at ETC. Soundtrack from my old band SNAKE, '99 in Saratoga. No relationship to video.
more first time messin with the Jones Buffer at ETC. Song by SNAKE 1988, Saratoga. Thrown on just to have some sound.
Early ETC experiments with voltage controlled video interfaces. Series for my un-born daughter Iris. Sound track excerpt from live concert "Improvs for Steinway And Electronics (Sequencial Circuits Pro One), Elmira, NY (1983)
ETC experiments with voltage controlled video synthesis. Part of series produced for Daughter Iris. Soundtrack (separate) excerpted from "Wind", using RMI Electra-piano, Korg Sigma, Pro One synth, and Analog delay. 1982
Video from ETC experiments with voltage-controlled video synthesis. Sound track from series called Sonic Studies on Post-Minimal Sculpture.
This track excerpted from Tapping and Rubbing the Inside of My Piano and was based on work of Bruce Nauman. Tools: clunker upright cabinet grand piano and Yamaha analog delay.
ETC experiments with voltage-controlled video synthesis produced for my unborn daughter Iris to watch. Soundtrack is excerpt from a live concert using amplified and effected Steinway and Pro One sequencing Synth. Elmira, NY 1983
ETC experiments with voltage controlled video synthesis. I cannot remember details of soundtrack but sounds like a basic improv with RMI Electra-piano and Yamaha analog delay.
Synthesizer-controlled video at ETC 1984.
This is an example of the actual sound that is controlling the modulation of the video through hybrid analog/digital interfaces.
Another long lost ETC voltage controlled video jam from around 1982, soundtrack mine, but un-remembered...similar date. Note: not as decayed as others for some reason.
One very long slow moving improv at the ETC with one very long slow moving sound track. About 1984. Trying to learn the VC system. Lost til now due to a faded penciled label. Done at the same time as Bedtime Stories For The Innocent which likely includes some excerpts from both audio and video. Had pretty basic audio tools; RMI Electra-Piano, Korg mono keyboard synth, Yamaha analog delay, and a Sequencial Circuits Pro One. Typically for me, sound would have been live solo.
Another 1982 ETC voltage controlled video jam. Sound from series called "User Presets" whereby I recorded immediately after clicking a user preset which I had never heard before (new synth). The score was simply to play what immediately came to mind until focus was lost. ca. 1990
Series of short experiments...variations on a theme...from 1982 ETC jams using voltage-controlled video synthesis. Music added later .
More ETC voltage controlled video synthesis. Soundtrack just added from 1983 jam with Peter Bombar (RANTZ II)
ETC voltage controlled video synth jam from 1982 with added soundtrack from same time period (sounds like one of my solo improvs)
